This week is the 3rd Annual Conference of the National Coalition for Latinxs with Disabilities (CNLD by its acronym in Spanish). "The purpose of the annual conference is to build community, share our stories with one another, and provide updates on activism, policy and research at the intersection of Disability and Latinidad."
The title of this year's conference is "Cultivating Leadership; Creating Agents of Change." The conference will be held between May 31 and June 2 at the Holiday Inn - Midtown in Austin, TX. It is co-hosted by the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities.
Dicapta is sponsoring this event and also, on Friday, June 1, our CEO María Victoria Diaz will be talking about "Access to Media, Culture and Entertainment for the Latinx community with disabilities." She will be presenting an overview of the access to media in Spanish for people with disabilities in the United States. To have access to media is to have access to information, education, culture and entertainment; unfortunately our community of Latinos with disabilities is not claiming its right to this access.
CNLD started after Katherine Perez and Michelle Garcia met in December of 2015. They both had the goal of creating a network "of individuals and organizations across the country who work with and for Latinxs with Disabilities, so that they might be able to share resources and collaborate." They and other volunteers organized the first conference in 2016 and the positive response to it served to connect several people with similar goals and then to establish the coalition.
Congratulations to the CNLD for their 3rd conference and for being able to be unite many people to work together in pro of the community of Latinos with disabilities.
