The Florida & Virgin Islands Deaf-Blind Collaborative is collaborating with twelve other Dual Sensory Projects, APH, HKNC, & NCDB, for the SouthEastern Transition Institute (SETI) in Gainesville, Florida, from June 23-26, 2022. The deadline to sign up for SETI is May 2nd.
SETI seeks to be a fun event for both young adults who are deaf or hard of hearing and are blind or have a visual impairment. During the weekend, they will have the opportunity to develop their dreams and gain tools to help them set a plan for the future.
Parents will have the opportunity to meet other families and professionals that will help them to develop strategies for their children’s future. The attendants of the events will be staying at the University of Florida’s dorms. Parents will be on one wing, and the teens will stay in another with SETI Project members.
The event will feature Keynote Speaker Cody Colchado Jr, 33-time world champion in powerlifting for both the able-bodied and disabled divisions. Mr. Colchado was born with hearing loss and lost his vision at age 17 after a football injury in high school. He has a baccalaureate degree in Adapted Physical Education and a Master of Science in Kinesiology. SETI hopes that he will be able to bring his life experience to teach the youngsters about overcoming challenges, taking risks, and achieving goals.
