Meeting room. Groups of people standing talk and smile.

This is not the first time the NSF has funded inclusion initiatives, but this one has a broader reach and wants to capitalize “on the proven success of a wide variety of programs across the U.S. in reaching populations traditionally underserved in STEM.” The objective of this initiative is to develop more diverse talent that in the future will contribute to a vibrant STEM workforce, vital for the development of the country.

The anticipated funding amount for this solicitation is $12,500,000 for about 40 Design and Development Launch Pilots.

This is just the first component of a multi-year program that in the future will include funding for up to 5 alliances for 5 years, with a maximum funding amount of $2,500,000 per year for each alliance. A third component is the establishment of a backbone organization that “will provide increased communications, interoperability, coordination, support, and accountability for the network of NSF INCLUDES alliances.

We applaud this initiative that will expand the participation by the underserved population, especially people with disabilities, in building a stronger STEM workforce.
